Today, I am going to walk you through the whole process of how essential oils work on the body.
There is an abundance of information about essential oils and their massive impact on our health – be it physical, emotional, spiritual, or intellectual but how many claims are true and how many are simply smart marketing tricks? Amidst this abundance of information, it becomes crucial to distinguish between genuine blessings.
Come – Let us separate facts from fiction.
I (Maryum – a new member of the Mangata team) am the fact-checker in my community as I believe that our real world is full of wonders.
Busting Mythical Claims of Aromatherapy
If you believe that aromatherapy can:
- Open up your energy channels
- Align/open up your chakras
- Work on your DNA structure
Here is the scented truth:
There is no scientific evidence to support the notion that aromatherapy has the power to open up energy channels or chakras within the body. It might help you in some ways, but I couldn’t find any authentic scientific study to prove this claim.
Aromatherapy can’t directly impact the structure of DNA. DNA is a highly complicated molecule responsible for carrying genetic information, and the structure is based on the principles of molecular biology.
Aromatherapy focuses more on subjective experiences, rather than physical changes at the molecular level.
Essential oils can help with:
- Promoting Sleep
- Relieving Stress (Lavender works wonders) This is the reason we have lavender-infused products.
- Skin Conditions like acne, irritation, and dryness
- Mood Enhancement
- Anxiety
- Headaches
- Nausea (Tried and tested on me- and it genuinely helped me feel better)
Some Eye-Opening Facts on Essential Oils:
- Can be poisonous if ingested
- Is never a replacement for medicine
- Essential oils DO EXPIRE
- Natural doesn’t mean it cannot have side effects
You may know what aromatherapy is and why is it so popular nowadays, but are you aware of the science of aromatherapy?
The Science of Aromatherapy:
What is So Special in Essentials Oils that Seems to Work like Magic
First: The Chemical Composition
Although each essential has a unique composition of compounds, it also consists of a diverse range of volatile compounds, including esters, terpenes, and phenols. These compounds contribute to the distinct aroma and potential therapeutic effects of each oil.
Second: Lab Studies
Several lab studies on essential oils have concluded various pharmacological properties in them. From antimicrobial activity against specific bacteria, fungi, and viruses to anti-inflammatory effects, these studies have got you covered.
Studies with certain essential oils have concluded anti-inflammatory effects by hindering some enzymes and/or signalling pathways entangled in inflammation.
Third: Research
Several types of research on the potential benefits of essential oils suggest that compounds present in them may interact with particular biological targets in the human body.
Certain essential oil components have been found to regulate neurotransmitter activity, influence ion channels, or work with enzymes involved in cellular processes.
Four: Experimentation
Undoubtedly, the inhalation of essential oils leads to the stimulation of our olfactory system. Olfactory receptors are located in the nasal cavity and can detect aromatic molecules. They are the ones that transmit signals to the brain, specifically to the limbic system. And, the limbic system plays a vital role in controlling our emotions and behaviour.
This is why I can confidently say essential oils work wonders when it comes to relaxation and mood-enhancing.
