We asked moms between ages 25 to 45, “What do you think about Stress?” and here are the most common replies:
“It’s inevitable!” 😮💨
“Oh, I think I’ve got a Ph.D. in mom stressology. Ask me anything!” 🙇
“I am stressed to the max!” 😥
“What’s my take on stress? Well, it’s my daily cardio workout, mental gymnastics, and the reason my coffee maker is my best friend.” ☕
“As a single mom, I am burning the candle at both ends” 😓
“Life is hard…” 😞
“Part of life! It comes with the mom job description!” 🤧
This concludes that most people define stress as “negative” or to express their negative feelings/thoughts/tiredness.
But! Is it a complete picture? Is stress only killing us?
I am a mom too so, I completely understand the emotions behind the the above replies. And, I think that stress is a natural response and every natural response has 2 sides; positive and negative.
So, I started exploring stress. I watched TED Talks, Podcasts by top psychologists, Books by Intellectuals, and other related content from legitimate sources. All these things point out that stress is a natural psychological and physiological response to a demand or challenge.
When faced with a stressor, the body releases stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline, which trigger the “fight or flight” response. This can lead to various physical and emotional symptoms.
The important thing is stress can be both beneficial and harmful. It can motivate us to perform better in certain situations, but chronic or excessive stress can have negative effects on our health and well-being, leading to a range of physical and mental health issues.
So, today on World Mental Health Day 2023💚, I am sharing the most common myths regarding stress. This is to help you reframe your situation.
I loved this quote by “M.P. Neary” as it pushed me to understand life better, rather than working on symptoms only.
“One of the best ways to reduce stress is to accept the things that you cannot control.”
Here we go with the top 5 myths:
👉 You can eliminate stress completely.
What If someone tells you that stress is a choice? Just observe their life closely. Stress can’t be eliminated entirely; it’s a part of our existence, and anyone claiming otherwise probably is ignorant.
👉 Stress is harmful, especially to your mind.
“Eustress” is a form of stress that can be positive and motivating, such as the stress before a challenging task or event. Have you ever wondered if the excitement you feel for your upcoming road trip or project is also a type of stress?
👉 Self-care is the best way to relieve stress.
If you are talking about relieving stress symptoms for a short period, yes! Self-care is a great idea. I find it so helpful in my life. It helps calm overstimulation and provides you time to connect with yourself. But, it works on the symptoms of stress, not on the root cause.
👉 No symptoms, no stress.
Not all stress comes with noticeable symptoms, so it’s crucial to acknowledge and address it proactively. Some people internalize stress, and it can manifest as physical symptoms, like headaches or muscle tension.
👉 You are aware when you are experiencing stress.
Not always! Most people are good at hiding and ignoring their everyday stress. They only realize that they are overwhelmed when the body starts showing symptoms like headaches, muscle tension, fatigue, panic attacks, blood pressure issues, etc.
To Sum It Up…
In this journey of life, stress is an inevitable companion.
